Entry for July 17, 2007
Today marks one of the darkest and yet unknown days in American history and i am not talking about the anniverary of Disneyland. Today over fifty years ago in 1944 The Port Chicago Naval base north of Oakland,Ca experienced one of the worst ammunition "accidents" in U.S. history over 5,000 tonsof ammuntion was ignited creating a terrible explosion. Leaving behind a seven hundred foot crater and over 300 dead men 200+ of which were Black. Port Chicago being a predominantly Black Base. After the disaster 280 soldiers refused to work in the conditions that had led them to that disaster. The government gave them the option of going back to work or facing a possible death penalty under a war-time mutiny charge. All but fifty went back to work those fifty were given prison sentences ranging from eight to fifteen years. A young Thurgood Marshall brought a suit against the Navy. Marshall did not get the convictions over turned, but was able to get clemency after the war. Freddie Meeks one of the few remaining survivors was finally granted a pardon by President Bill Clinton in 1999. There were many conspiracy theories surrounding the explosion. Reason being in 1981 the Nay admitted to nuclear testing at the base. Could the Government have been developing a low yield nuclear bomb and not informed or trained the soldiers handling it?
